Antwan Horfee - Imaginarium
Parisian graffiti legend Horfée has left an indelible mark on the streets of his hometown and beyond. Enigmatic, tirelessly prolific, wildly innovative and obscenely talented, he has earned a worldwide reputation for his instantly recognizable style and bold commitment.
He is a graffiti artist, whose illegal and gloriously idiosyncratic work has earned him worldwide recognition.
This month, Horfée crosses the Channel and seamlessly enters the world of high art, as he unveils his first ever solo exhibition in London with Topsafe London . Don’t expect graffiti. “ This show is not graffiti at all ,” says the artist. “ I mean; I do graffiti outside, but for me, an art show can’t be graffiti. Graffiti is just not the same as ‘accepted art’: it has to be illegal to fit that bill.”
Imaginarium is the culmination of Horfée's obsession with drawing and making - on paper, canvas, wood and sculpture - far from the streets, trains and rooftops that made him famous around the world.
The result is a ridiculously energetic collection of images and 3D pieces, all painstakingly executed by hand over many months. The exhibition is reminiscent of graffiti, Horfée says, in that he “ took all the energy I was putting into my illegal painting and focused it on one goal: to describe and organize my aesthetic in a way that I can share with everyone, graffiti fan or not. ”
