GUMMY SOFA

design Le Taudis & Louis Siles - 2023
Edition 1/1. Polyurethane, fiberglass, resin.
Shot by Olivier Humbert at La Condition Publique, Roubaix.

GUMMY SOFA is a bold work that fuses design and contemporary art with a playful approach. This three-seater bench, evoking a gigantic pink chewing gum, strikes with its pop and offbeat aesthetic. The swiveling blue seats recall the emblematic style of Pierre Paulin or Verner Panton, creating a nod to the iconic designs of the 70s. By marrying these elements, GUMMY SOFA pays homage to the past while offering a refreshing and modern vision of design.

Beyond its amusing appearance, this work conveys a deeper message about today's consumer society. The choice of chewing gum as a symbol is significant: it represents what we consume quickly before throwing it away, an ephemeral cycle that reflects our modern lifestyle. In the same way that chewing gum is chewed and thrown away, objects, ideas, and even works of art undergo a similar treatment in a culture that constantly values novelty.

Handcrafted with a wood, fiberglass, polyurethane and resin structure, GUMMY SOFA combines craftsmanship and philosophical reflection. This material solidity contrasts with the idea of ephemerality that it conveys, questioning our relationship to objects in a society that consumes at a frantic speed. By questioning our way of consuming, the work explores the evolution of pop art in 2024, confronting the viewer with the apparent superficiality of contemporary art and the depth of its societal implications.
